Intumescent Coatings – Industrial Warehouse
Overview
JWS Coatings UK was appointed to apply intumescent fire protection coatings to internal structural steelwork as part of a new-build warehouse development. The objective was to meet the project’s required fire rating specifications while maintaining an acceptable architectural finish to exposed elements.
Surface Preparation
All structural members were mechanically prepared in accordance with ISO 8501-1 (ST2/ST3) as per manufacturer recommendations. Surfaces were degreased, de-dusted, and primed with a compatible zinc phosphate primer. On-site QA checks were carried out prior to coating application to verify dry film thickness (DFT) on primer layers.
Application
Intumescent coatings were spray-applied using airless equipment to achieve the specified fire protection rating. Application thickness was monitored throughout, with full DFT checks conducted after curing. Touch-ups and edge detail work were completed manually to ensure full coverage on connection points and beam flanges.
Result
All primary and secondary steel members were coated to achieve the designated 60-minute fire resistance rating. Coating works were completed on programme and passed third-party inspection. Full QA documentation, including DFT logs, batch records, and certification, was provided to the client and principal contractor.
