Overview
JWS Coatings UK was contracted to apply intumescent fire-protective coatings to structural steelwork at a newly constructed warehouse facility. The objective was to meet specified fire resistance ratings in line with building control requirements, ensuring the steel frame achieves both safety and compliance standards without disruption to the wider construction schedule
Surface Preparation
All steel was prepared to the required cleanliness standard prior to application. This included mechanical abrasion to remove mill scale, followed by dust removal using vacuum and tack cloth methods. Primers were checked for compatibility with the selected intumescent system, with touch-up priming carried out where required.
Application
JWS applied a two-component, water-based intumescent system using airless spray equipment to achieve an even build-up and consistent film thickness. All coatings were installed in accordance with manufacturer data sheets and fire engineering specifications, with wet film thickness checks completed regularly to verify coverage.
Areas included steel beams, columns, and soffits. All coatings were applied in controlled conditions to allow for correct curing times.
Result
The project was completed on time and to spec, with all steelwork now achieving the certified fire resistance rating required by the main contractor. A full application report including dry film thickness (DFT) readings and compliance documentation was provided for inclusion in the final O&M manual.
